Teale's Journey
Somewhere: For Us Magazine

The Gender Divide in Highland Drum Corps
Tom Tom Magazine
Issue 11
This article explores the ways in which women have traditionally been pigeonholed in Scottish/Irish pipe bands, viewed as eye candy rather than serious drummers, or excluded from the genre altogether. The drums themselves become a metaphor for how women and girls are expected to behave. This disparity negatively affects men as well and serves to only stifle the musical genre which strives to break through the constraints of the competitive form and break new artistic ground.
